Operation Diabetes
Operation Diabetes is a Patient Care Project that operates within APhA – ASP. The mission of Operation Diabetes is to spread knowledge about diabetes and assist patients in becoming more aware of an increasingly growing health issue. This is done by performing blood glucose screenings in various community settings, including pharmacies, health fairs, and other community events. For the upcoming year, it is our goal to lead a screening at least once every month. A screening consists of four to five students along with a pharmacist to help supervise and usually last two hours. Operation Diabetes is a great way to participate in an important health issue that has a significant impact in your community. Here is what some of our members say about volunteering their time with Operation Diabetes:
“The patients that participate in the screenings are very friendly and grateful for any information you can give them. Many of the patients ask a lot of questions about which of their habits can be changed to promote healthier living and who they should talk to next regarding diabetes. It is important to let people know what they can do to help prevent further onset of diabetes.”
“Operation Diabetes is unique in that students can interact with patients one-on-one, and make an immediate impact on their lives. As students, we are able to help patients understand diabetes and why screenings are necessary. It's a really good feeling to know that you can make a difference and educate people, all while educating yourself.”
“The best part of Operation Diabetes is the instant gratification of knowing that even as a student you can make a huge difference in someone’s life. It’s also great practice counseling patients. A lot of the times people do not realize they are at an increased risk to develop diabetes and you can inform them about small changes they can make to help create a better lifestyle. Other times, patients come in well informed about diabetes but they have a couple points they want to clarify. No matter what, patients are always appreciative of your help. It’s a wonderful experience.”
